How we handle your data — kept simple, honest, and plain.
Last updated: 12 May 2026
Hi there — thanks for stopping by. We know privacy policies are usually a snooze-fest, so we’ve written ours the way we write everything else here: plainly, honestly, and without legalese where we can help it. Here’s exactly what happens to your data when you visit, and what your rights are.
Who we are
The Ultimate Gift Guide (theultimategiftguide.co.uk) is a small, independent UK-based gift inspiration blog, run by a solo creator who genuinely loves finding gifts people will actually use. We’re not a big corporation — just one person, a laptop, and a lot of gift ideas.
For the purposes of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018, we are the “data controller” of any personal information collected through this website.
What information we collect
We try to collect as little as possible. We don’t run analytics, we don’t have a contact form on every page, we don’t have comments enabled, and we don’t run an email newsletter. Here’s what does happen, though:
- Basic server logs. Like most websites, our hosting provider automatically records anonymous technical information — such as your IP address, browser type, device, and the pages you visit — for security, troubleshooting, and stability purposes. These logs are retained for a short period and are not used to identify you personally.
- WordPress essentials. WordPress, the platform powering this site, sets a small number of functional cookies needed to make the site work properly.
- Affiliate link clicks. When you click an affiliate link on one of our posts, the destination website (e.g. Amazon, LEGO, Etsy, TK Maxx) may set their own cookies on your device so they can credit us for any qualifying purchase. More on this below.
We do not collect names, email addresses, payment information, or any data you’d actively type in — because we don’t have any forms for you to type into.
In plain English If you just visit and read, we don’t know who you are — and that’s honestly how we like it.
Cookies and tracking
Cookies are tiny text files that websites store on your device. We use them as sparingly as possible. The cookies you may encounter on this site fall into two camps:
- Strictly necessary cookies — set by WordPress to keep the site running smoothly. These don’t track you and can’t be switched off.
- Third-party affiliate cookies — set only when you click an outbound affiliate link, by the retailer’s website (not by us).
You can clear or block cookies at any time through your browser settings. Doing so won’t break this site — though it may affect how other websites you visit work.
Affiliate links and disclosures
The Ultimate Gift Guide is supported by affiliate marketing. This means that some of the links in our posts are special tracking links: if you click one and go on to make a purchase, we may earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you.
We’re a member (or in the process of joining) the following affiliate programmes:
- Amazon Associates UK — as an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases.
- LEGO Affiliate Programme
- Etsy UK Affiliate Programme
- TK Maxx UK Affiliate Programme
We only ever recommend gifts we genuinely think are worth your time and money. The commission helps keep this blog running — buying us a coffee while we hunt for the next great gift idea — but it never influences what we recommend.
A note on Amazon As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. Amazon may use cookies to track your purchase journey from our site to theirs in order to credit us for the referral.
Analytics and third-party services
At the moment, we don’t run any third-party analytics services like Google Analytics. If that changes in future, we’ll update this page and let you know.
The site is hosted on a standard WordPress hosting provider, which may process server logs as described above. Embedded content from other websites (for example, product images served from Amazon) behaves exactly as if you’d visited those websites directly.
Pinterest and social sharing
We share our content on Pinterest, where we use Pin images to direct readers back to our blog. When you arrive from Pinterest, Pinterest’s own privacy policy and cookies apply to your activity on their platform — not ours. Once you’re on our site, we don’t pass any information back to Pinterest.
You can read Pinterest’s privacy policy on their website.
Your rights under UK GDPR
Even though we collect very little, you still have rights under UK data protection law. These include:
- The right to be informed — that’s what this page is for.
- The right of access — you can ask what (if any) personal data we hold about you.
- The right to rectification — to correct anything inaccurate.
- The right to erasure — to ask us to delete your data.
- The right to restrict processing, data portability, and the right to object.
- Rights related to automated decision-making — we don’t do any of this, by the way.
To exercise any of these rights, just drop us an email (see the contact section below). We’ll respond within one month, as required by law.
If you’re not happy with how we’ve handled your data, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
How we keep your data safe
Because we collect so little, there’s not much to keep safe — but we still take security seriously. Our hosting provider maintains industry-standard security measures, the site is served over HTTPS, and we keep WordPress and its components up to date.
Children’s privacy
This website is intended for an adult audience — typically people shopping for gifts for others. We don’t knowingly collect any data from children under 13. If you believe a child has somehow provided us with information, please get in touch and we’ll remove it promptly.
Changes to this policy
If we ever make changes — for example, if we add analytics, an email newsletter, or join a new affiliate programme — we’ll update this page and refresh the “Last updated” date at the top. We recommend popping back in occasionally if you’re curious.
Contact us
Got a question about this policy, or want to exercise any of your rights? Please get in touch via our Contact page — we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.
Thanks for reading all the way to the end. Now go find someone a brilliant gift.
